Street Teams Vital To Your Music Scene
By Jesse

Promote, promote, promote!  You can never do enough of it.  Being in a band is one thing, but promoting your shows and getting people out to them is a different story.  That’s where street teams come into play.

Street teams are slowly becoming a necessity as bands continue to book shows and write music limiting their time to promoting their events.  Street teams are put in place to flyer area shows, post to message boards and manage email lists.

Teams generally consist of fans and friends of the band who take it upon themselves to help get the word on the street about their favorite group- whether its for an upcoming show or a newly released CD.  Some of the more active teams have presidents and area managers to take care of organizing the group by holding monthly meetings or driving the members to various shows.

Get a small schedule together of local shows you’d like to flyer.  Organize a group of friends and recruit a body or two to drive your group to these shows.  It’s generally a good idea to ask the club for permission to pass out promo material inside.  The only drawback to promoting outside is that you have to wait for a show to be over.  Standing outside near the exit, on the other hand, presents the best opportunity for getting to the most people as they leave the show.

Most bands would be more than happy to get the extra help needed to promote their events.  If you have a band in mind you’d like to help, get in touch with them and tell them you’re interested in helping to pass out flyers.  Take it upon yourself to recruit some friends and start a team of your own.  You don’t necessarily have to promote for one band.  Larger street team organizations provide their members with boxes of tapes, CD’s, and flyers to pass out at concerts where they live.

The footwork involved in starting a street team is monumental at best.  Besides doing your part to help your music scene, you’ll get the satisfaction of getting your favorite band or organization noticed in places they might not be able to get to.
