The End of an Era at Pirate Studios

Once again I find myself apologizing for not being responsible with my time. I know this is not an ailment that only I have come down with. This is a musicians’ plague, best corrected to avoid an unemployment plague. I have been working on a cure, when I come up with something I will share. Let’s get down to business.

March saw the end of an era in Lake County music history. Pirate Studios closed its doors the end of the month of March. Pirate studios started years ago in Antioch and have fostered the punk, hardcore, and metal scene in Lake County. I had the benefit of playing a show at Pirate in early March. It was a first for me and I was totally stoked when the date was booked. We lightly promoted the show, friends and family, and got ready. We played a thirty minute set of hip-hop. Mapping the Audio Landscape is a concept project, basically I do whatever I want and have different musicians out for each show. There were about 75 fans there. Not fans of anything in particular, fans of music. I saw spikes, converse, jeans, piercing, tattoos, and any other way people can express themselves visually. It was one of the best crowds I have ever played for and I had nothing to do with it. This was Lake County music fans second home. If Pirate books the shows, the faithful will come! I guess that’s the sad part of this column for me, I will never be able to play there again. My loss is second to their fans and friends who lost their favorite venue.

Rule 22 is still alive and kicking. There are great things in their future. I had a chance to talk to these guys outside of a show. I asked Tom why they made the decision to close; “We opened the studio to help our band, and the amount of responsibility kept us from touring as much as we want to.” The closing of the studio is a loss to the music community, but Tom and Dave are going to contribute plenty to the areas’ music scene. Thanks to those guys for having me and everyone else who played there, recorded there, or just went to hang with good people and listen to good music! It’s a part of my music life that I will never forget.

For those of you who have been listening to JstreetRadio Thursday nights from 8-10 on WRLR 98.3 FM, thank you! Jesse, Razor and I have been working very hard to make that the best show on the air! Those of you who have not listened yet, you are missing out o the areas best local bands. Ammi was in, we have had Bleeding Martyr, Tafoyas Lost Boyzz, Thin Cities (formerly Braille), Cyntext, Wingnut, Poor Pauly, Sweet Jelly (Milwaukee/Madison), Saturday Action Theatre (also the writer for Death Walks, see Myspace for trailers for this movie!), and Digital Kill in the studio to name a few. Sometimes there are acoustic performances; sometimes you get us in our tavern moods. No matter what, I promise you will enjoy the show so come check it out. Thursday nights from 8-10 p.m. on 98.3 FM. If you are in a band and want to hear your music on the radio, hit the link on the home page for Jstreet and get the details there! 'Til Thursday………

Be good to each other, I’m out.
