WRLR 98.3 FM PRESS RELEASE - 2/21/06

Full Tower, Full Power

ROUND LAKE HEIGHTS, IL - Local community radio WRLR 98.3 FM made substantial
improvements in operations this past weekend after completing the long
awaited installation of its permanent antenna tower and new transmitter.

Since going on the air September 4, 2005 with its inaugural broadcast, WRLR
had been broadcasting on a temporary 40’ tower, about half the height of the
new tower, and with a signal of only 50 watts. Chief RF Engineer Mike
Bramuchi confirms that the station is now broadcasting at full licensed
power of 96 watts) from the top of a new 100’ tower.

Based on initial reports from staff and listeners, WRLR is now able to reach
throughout Lake County, out west into McHenry County and up north into
Wisconsin. Numerous listeners have called the station to let it know they
are getting its programming. Some of the areas that have checked in are:
Gurnee, Waukegan, Zion, Deerfield, Highland Park, Arlington Heights,
Northbrook, North Barrington, Long Grove, Crystal Lake, and Mchenry. Also
from: Twin Lakes, Salem, Bristol and Racine County in Wisconsin.

Pictures of the tower being erected can be seen at the station’s website:
www.wrlr.fm

The station estimates its terrestrial broadcast range now has increased to
potential listening audience of more than several hundred thousand. WRLR
also has the ears of a growing worldwide audience through the streaming of
its programming from its website. One local mayor (Ila Bauer, Round Lake
Park) on vacation in Orlando, Florida has been keeping tabs on news back
home just this way.

WRLR 98.3 FM PRESS RELEASE
=============================================================
January 5, 2005

WRLR 98.3 FM will broadcast Chamber sponsored mayors forum live

ROUND LAKE HEIGHTS, IL - Local community radio WRLR 98.3 FM which serves the
Round Lake Area and much of western Lake County will be broadcasting live,
for the first time ever, the Round Lake Chamber of Commerce and Industry's
mayors' forum on Thursday, January 19. It starts at 12 Noon and will
covered beginning to end. The broadcast will also be streamed from the
station's website at: www.wrlr.fm

The Chamber meeting, which will be held at the Round Lake High School
theater, annually brings together all the area's five mayors (Ted Mueller,
Hainesville; Bill Gentes, Round Lake; Rich Hill, Round Lake Beach; Terry
Lumpkins, Round Lake Heights; Ila Bauer, Round Lake Park) to update chamber
members on the progress their villages have achieved last year and to report
on each town's plans for 2006.

WRLR will carry the broadcast in conjunction with the Chamber. Businesses
and residents who can't attend the event or hear the live broadcast will
have the chance to hear it when it is rebroadcast at various times and days
(TBA) in the weeks to follow.

Since going on the air September 4, 2005 with its inaugural broadcast,
WRLR-FM (98.3) has accomplished several notable firsts in the short span of
less than a year.

"WRLR's initial 'first' was a news scoop of an annoucement by Illinois State
Senator Geo Karis, speaking at the inaugural broadcast ceremony, stating her
intention to run for reelection in the upcoming March primary. Another news
exclusive was the broadcast of a motorist's eyewitness report of a traffic
related pedestrian fatality on Christmas weekend." said station President
Bish Krywko.

The station has done numerous remotes from local festivals and live
play-by-play coverage of various high school football games last year. It
currently is doing play-by-play of hign school basketball games.

Another historic first will be when the station does wall-to-wall election
coverage from the Lake County building in Waukegan for the March primary
(starting at 6:30 p.m.). Roving reporters will visit a number of campaign
headquarters election night for key local races," said Krywko. "As far as
we can tell, never before has there been this kind of reporting in Lake
County."

Low-powered But High Hopes
Round Lake Radio to concentrate on having local flavor

By M. Daniel Gibbard
Tribune staff reporter
Published September 2, 2005

Fed up with generic commercial broadcasting, a group of Lake County residents is about to ride the local radio wave.

Round Lake Radio, WRLR-FM 98.3, will flip the switch at 7 p.m. Friday, becoming the first non-religious station broadcasting in the Chicago area under the federal government's low-power FM service.

"One of the biggest complaints now is that all the stations sound alike," said WRLR President Bish Krywko. "There's no localism in radio. What the low-power movement said is [that] the community loses because of that."

At WRLR, "we can talk about the dogcatcher or the Wal-Mart coming to town and knocking out the small businesses, or small-town corruption, if it's happening," he said. "Local radio embodies programming at the street and back-yard fence level."

Information on weather conditions will come from Campbell Airport in Grayslake.

"We're not going to give the temperature at O'Hare because nobody cares," Krywko said.

The broadcast radius for a low-power station is projected at about 3 1/2 miles, but during half-power testing, the signal went farther, Krywko said. With full power, the signal might reach from Antioch to Mundelein, he said.

The Federal Communications Commission created low-power FM, or LPFM, in January 2000, and there are 690 LPFM stations on the air, according to LPFMDatabase.com. Programming is restricted to non-commercial educational broadcasting, and transmitter power to 100 watts maximum and antenna height to 100 feet.

Krywko, 52, who briefly studied radio after high school in the 1970s, heard a news blurb about the program in 2000 and thought, "Wow, this would be cool if we could get a community radio station in Round Lake."

As it turned out, it would not be easy.

Government rules and red tape created plenty of frustration in the five years Krywko and his all-volunteer staff spent getting the station on the air. It didn't help that, being halfway between the big media markets of Chicago and Milwaukee, there was precious little bandwidth available.

"There were a couple of times we were ready to pull the plug before we even got it turned on," he said. "[I thought], `It's just not going to happen.' And either something came through or someone encouraged me to hang in there."

Low-power radio proponents speak with near-revolutionary fervor of the need to offset what they see as increasing domination of the airwaves by a few large media corporations.

Consolidation has resulted in programming that is not only homogenized, but also aimed at the lowest common denominator, say members of the Prometheus Radio Project, a non-profit lobbying and advisory group.

"Community radio was born out of a great need in many diverse communities across the United States for a voice that wasn't controlled by the increasingly consolidated corporate media giants," said Hannah Sassaman, an organizer for the Philadelphia-based group. "In a city like Chicago . . . it's very difficult for radio stations to tell their own stories."

WRLR is an impressive outfit, she said, adding, "They're very, very well-developed and very professional."

The Round Lake region is fertile ground for local issues, with a large influx of working-class immigrants settling not far from new subdivisions of upscale homes, Krywko said.

Some of the station's programming will follow traditional radio formats. Stan Bauer, 46, will host "your basic wacky morning-drive show," with listener calls, traffic, news, weather and high school sports. As a rookie, he is counting on feedback to guide the format.

"We'll let the community tell us where to go," he said.

In the evening Bauer, who does computer networking and Internet design, will co-host with his wife, Diana, a politics show, "I Have Issues."

"The whole idea of that programming is to get people riled and get them involved," Bauer said. "We'll have some fun in the process, but we'll be trying to address all the issues that are most out-front in our area.

"We're going to do whatever we can" to keep anyone from talking about Iraq, Bauer said.
State Sen. Adeline Geo-Karis (R-Zion) will be on the station's inaugural show Friday, along with state Rep. Bob Churchill (R-Grayslake) and other local politicians.

Programs will have to follow FCC guidelines on content, Krywko said, but obscenity is not likely to be a problem.

"The [radio] board has agreed to uphold community standards. I don't foresee a Howard Stern on our station," he said.

RLR's offices and studio are housed in the old Round Lake Heights Village Hall and police station.

"We are the only station that has its own jail cells," Krywko said. "Non-performing talent or account reps will be placed there accordingly."

Getting the station up and running has cost about $50,000 so far, including a $30,000 donation from Lakewood Homes, which has built numerous developments in the area. Funding for the station has also come from organizers' pockets.

"I can't say how much, or my wife will find out," Krywko joked.

The station cannot accept advertisements, but programs can be sponsored, and sponsors can be named on the air. Selling airtime to churches is a possibility, Krywko said, but the station would be reluctant to provide a platform to would-be Rush Limbaughs or Michael Moores.

"I think there's enough of those guys out there now," he said.

WRLR at RLB Fest - Volunteer Workers Schedule Update:

Round Lake Beach Fest is not far off. It will be WRLR's first big public outing and with some luck in the logistics department, our first broadcast and remote.

We need volunteers to work the WRLR booth helping register future listeners/volunteers, run our 'RadioActive' Dial (winners get a WRLR t-shirt or one of many donated prizes by area businesses), hand out flyers and sell t-shirts. The station also will be recording fest goers giving their name, where they live and the WRLR call letters. WRLR will later select the best of the bunch and use them on air as promo spots for the station.

We can use all the help we can get, so choose a day and time slot to work the WRLR tent. Sign up to make WRLR's day a memorable one. Contact WRLR promotions staffers Maggie or Irma at:

Local radio station to hit airwaves this summer
By Matt PeraRound Lake News (05/13/2005)

As the weeks wear on, the Round Lake area is getting closer and closer to having its own radio station that will supply residents with local news and sports.

WRLR 98.3 FM is continuing to make strides toward opening the station's doors and getting its programs on the airwaves.

Rondaradio, the not-for-profit organization that runs WRLR, received the radio tower on May 11. It will be erected near the old Round Lake Heights Village Hall, 629 W. Pontiac Court, which the village board allowed Rondaradio to use.

Comcast will also send out a survey crew in the near future to gauge what the station's service needs are and how much it will cost.

The organization also recently received a donation from Classic Printery in Round Lake Park, which donated more than $1,000 worth stationary needs such as business cards and envelopes to the company.

Rondaradio President Bish Krywko said the station has received various donations from smaller sponsor. but said he is still looking for funds to get the station fully functional.

"We are still looking for more big corporations to help underwrite the capital cost of the equipment," he said.

WRLR still needs to purchase a transmitter, control boards, CD decks, microphones and a call-in phone system, Krywko added.

The station also recently filled two of its top positions, bringing in Jay Stephen as general manager and Matthew Misiek as sports director.

Stephen is a Waukegan resident who has hosted and produced two internet radio shows that were heard nationally on the IBC Radio Network. He also produced a political discussion program called "Point Blank," which aired on Waukegan's WKRS.

Misiek graduated from Columbia College in Chicago in 2003. He will join fellow Columbia graduate Michael "Jae" Cassacio as a volunteer with WRLR.

The radio's sports department will cover six high schools, Antioch, Lakes, Grant Township, Grayslake, Round Lake and Mundelein, offering play-by-play of games.

The news director title is the only management position still open, Krywko said. He added thatvolunteering in numerous capacities with the station could offer high school and college students interested in broadcast media an opportunity to experiment.

"We think it does give them an opportunity to train and get experience without the restraints that they would find at a commercial station," he said. "Most stations have pretty tight formats and I think that this is what attracts young talent and we will probably attract interns from colleges as well."

Krywko said it was very important to get high school students involved in the station, which will broadcast at 100 watts and reach about 90,000 people in western Lake County. The station's target date to hit the airwaves is July 8 to coincide with the Round Lake Beach Festival.

"Anyone thinking about doing radio, or has thought about any kind of media, this is a natural step," Krywko said. "Because you learn to work as a team and do stuff you would in any communication forum."

For more information about the station, call 847-546-9757, or visit the WRLR Web site at www.WRLR.fm.

News from Militia Promotions

If you in any way, shape or form are at all apart of the music industry this e-mail needs to be read and forwarded to everyone you think could be helped by it's contents.

Milwaukee Music Conference - Doomsday 2005

Here is a brief overview of the show and its purpose, below you will find what we are looking for, please read this in full detail.

This show is a Heavy Metal showcase intended for bands who want to expand their fan base and meet more bands in the scene. We have had great success in the past and will improve on that success each year Doomsday is held. This year, with Militia Promotions helping with the show we will be turning this more into a music showcase for unsigned bands to showcase in front of the industry reps rather than just the other bands. The last four years the show was setup so all bands could network together and help each one another to build stronger fan bases and took place on one stage, this year with the addition of two more stages the transition into a music conference has taken form. This is a huge deal and has created a bit of a stir in the music industry and plans further unfold for the event.

BANDS~ Currently, we are still in the information gathering stage of the show. We have the Rave Mainstage, Vibe, and Bar. The cost of the show will be dependant upon the stage you wish to play and the stage that is still available. Each stage will be random draw order that you will know well in advance of the show. The Mainstage will be $500, Bar $400, and Vibe $300. This will cover all your costs and you will also recieve 100 tickets to sell. Most bands who have played Doomsday in the past had little trouble selling enough tickets to break even if not make profit.

Doomsday is non-profit. All $ sent to me is used for the show. Any remainder is given back to the bands. It is not uncommon for each band to get back about $100 - depending on the show.

Where: The Rave/Eagle's Club 2401 W. Wisconsin Ave. Milwaukee Wi.

When: January 2005 3:30-11pm. We will have a confirmed date in December.
Bands load in at 2:00pm

What: Bring heads, guitars, effects, and drums. We will need some bands to let others use their cabinets so we can have backline for 3 stages. Everyone can use thier own drums.

Length: Bands will get 30 min. w/15 min. breakdown. No band will exceed their time--all bands will get at least 30 min.

If your interested in playing please Contact:

Larry Weeks Doomsday 2005,
403 Weis Street #4, Allenton Wi. 53002
262.629.5678
rictusgrinforever@yahoo.com

Any band who wants to get onboard can send $ to the name and address above. This will guarantee you a spot.
